IELTS Essay Writing Task – 2

In IELTS Essay Writing Task 2, you may fully agree, fully disagree, or present a balanced view. For Advantages & Disadvantages and Positive & Negative Development essays, you can argue that either side outweighs the other or discuss both equally. Use the template that best fits the question type.

IELTS Essay Writing: 5 Types of IELTS Essays

  1. Given a point of view & asked to what extent you agree/ disagree with it.
  2. Given 2 opposing views, discuss both the views & give your opinion.
  3. Given a fact/statement, discuss its advantages & disadvantages & your opinion.
  4. Given a problem, talk about their causes, results of the problem or solution of the problem.
  5. Given a fact/statement, why? & its positive or negative development, give your opinion.

There are 4 parts in IELTS essay Writing:

  • Paragraph 1: Introduction                 (50 words)
  • Paragraph 2: Main Body 1 with e.g.   (80 words)
  • Paragraph 3: Main Body 2 with e.g.   (80 words)
  • Paragraph 4: Conclusion                    (50 words)
    Note: examples can be about me, my friends, family, area I live, my country

1) Opinion IELTS Essay Writing

In this type of IELTS essay writing task, there would be someone’s else opinion, and it will be asked to you whether you are agree or disagree? The instructions can be asked in following ways:

  • Do you agree or disagree?
  • Do you agree?
  • What do you think?
  • To what extent do you agree
  • To what extent do you agree or disagree?
  • What is your opinion?

Note: No matter how the instructions are written, you can choose any opinion—agree, disagree, or partly agree (balanced view).

2) Discussion IELTS Essay Writing

In discussion IELTS essay writing, there would be a statement &  you must present both the side. 

Some people think there should be free health care for all the people, but other disagree. Discuss both sides.

Or there can be two separate issues which you need to discuss:

Some people think that the urban spaces should be used for parks rather than for housing. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

3) Advantages & Disadvantages IELTS Essay Writing

In this type of IELTS essay writing, there would be 2 types of questions.

(i) Advantages & Disadvantages IELTS Essay Writing:

This is similar to discussion essay where you are given a statement & you have to discuss positive and negative side of the issue.

It requires you to present an opinion & explain your opinion.

Problem & solution IELTS essay writing task can be asked in various ways:

Some children have serious weight problems. What are the possible solutions

(ii) Cause & Solution IELTS Essay Writing

Obesity has become a bigger and more global problem. What are the causes of this? and what solution can be taken to tackle these problems?

(iii) Problem & Solution IELTS Essay Writing

In many countries, students nowadays spend too much time on their mobile phones, which affects their studies and social life. What are the main problems caused by this, and what solutions can be suggested?

(iv) Cause & Effect IELTS Essay Writing
